HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF NESSIE, THE LOCH NESS MONSTER?

Loch Ness is a very large lake in Scotland.
Many people think a monster lives in it.

Some people have tried to take photos and videos, but Nessie is very shy and the pictures are not very clear.

People have also tried to explore the lake, but it is very deep and very dark.

Some people watched the lake, while other people used equipment like underwater cameras, microphones and sonar to scan the lake carefully.

People have even explored the lake in submersibles. No one has found anything definite.

There are lots of possible explanations for what people have seen in Loch Ness. Maybe the monster is just a giant eel, a large bird, a tree or a seal. A few people even think it could be a plesiosaur, which is a type of dinosaur.

So, what do you think? Do you believe that Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, is real?

PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We use the present simple to talk about routines, what you do every day or every week. Example: I watch cartoons every day.

We use the present continuous to talk about things we are doing now.
Example:
I’m watching a film now.

Be careful!
For the present simple, add ‘s’ or ‘es’ for he/she/it and make the negative form with ‘do not’ (don’t’) or ‘does not´ (‘doesn’t’).
Examples:
My dad makes dinner every evening.
He doesn’t make lunch.

For the present continuous, use the verb ‘to be’ and ‘-ing’ and add ‘not’ to make the negative form.

Example:

We are studying English now.
We aren’t studying maths.

We say... We don’t say...
I wake up every morning at 7:00. (NOT I am waking up every morning at 7:00.)
She is talking on the phone now. (NOT She talks on the phone now.)
They aren’t reading a book now. (NOT They don’t reading a book now.)

THE UNITED KINGDOM

Some British people say that they are from Great Britain...
Other British people say they are from the United Kingdom...
Some say they are from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland...

What a mess! What do you think about these different places?

England, Scotland and Wales are on an island in the north-west of Europe called `Great Britain´. Great Britain together with Northern Ireland is called The United Kingdom (the UK).

England is the largest part of the UK. Its name comes from people called “the Angles”. About 53 million people live in England and the capital city is London.

Scotland is in the north of Great Britain. Over 5 million people live in Scotland. The highest mountain in the UK is in this country. It is called `Ben Nervis´. The capital city of Scotland is Edinburgh.

Wales is in the west of Great Britain. About 3 million people live there and about 20 per cent of them speak Welsh. Welsh is one of the oldest languages in Europe. The capital of Wales is Cardiff.

Northern Ireland is a part of Ireland. Nearly 2 million people live there. There are huge rocks made by lava from a volcano, but an old story says that a giant built it! The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
